Labor and the Jobs Guarantee: Session 01 of 03

Thursday, April 01, 2021

12:00 PM CDT

On April 1, 8, and 15, Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung NYC (RLS-NYC), United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE), Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity (GISP), and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) will host a three-week short course, Labor and a Jobs Guarantee

This series will serve three purposes. It will:
1) be a popular education training on the Jobs Guarantee (JG);
2) highlight the historic potential of a JG through the lenses of racial justice and climate justice; and
3) most importantly, create and build links between those advocating for a jobs guarantee and those fighting for a strong, mass, working-class, labor movement following the framework of UE’s Them and Us Unionism.

This course will feature Sara Nelson, Carl Rosen, Dr. Darrick Hamilton, Judy Ancel, Dr. William (Sandy) Darity Jr., Dr. Fadhel Kaboub, Keon Liberato, Kari Thompson, Sydney Ghazarian, and more.

The first week will focus on the jobs guarantee and specifically the possibilities presented by Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s Jobs Guarantee Resolution. It will explain the concept, what is included, and what is not included in a Jobs Guarantee, and then explain its historic potential with regards to racial justice, climate, and labor.

The second week will pick up the strand and focus on the labor movement today. The invited labor leaders will talk about the challenges and opportunities facing unions today, and how the jobs guarantee can be a game changer for the mass, broad-based, labor movement that is necessary to achieve the Green New Deal.

The third week will be smaller interactive facilitated discussions to draw out the links from the first two weeks in order to build toward a common understanding of what a labor-centered jobs guarantee could look like, and what it would take to make it a reality.
